Baku, August 8 – A woman gave birth early this morning at the “January 20” station of the Baku Metro, in an unusual incident that quickly drew public attention and warm reactions.

According to the Baku Metro press service, the event occurred at 07:40. Station staff immediately provided first aid and called emergency services. The ambulance team delivered the baby on-site, with the birth taking place at 36–37 weeks of pregnancy. The newborn boy weighed 2.2 kg and measured 47 cm.

Both mother, identified as 20-year-old Asmar Mammadova, and child were transported to the Republican Clinical Hospital. Doctors removed the placenta, administered postnatal care, and placed the mother in the maternity pathology department, where her condition is now stable. The premature infant is under special monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit and receiving CPAP-assisted breathing due to initial respiratory distress.

The boy’s grandmother, Sevil Mammadova, told Oxu.az she had been accompanying her daughter-in-law to a medical check-up when contractions began just minutes from their destination.

“Everyone helped — shop workers, metro employees, passengers. Someone brought water, someone a towel. We are grateful to all,” she said, adding that this was her daughter-in-law’s second pregnancy and the family plans to name the child Jasur.

In a gesture of goodwill, Baku Metro announced the boy will receive free metro rides until the age of 25, along with special gifts for the parents. “He will be a special passenger of the Baku Metro,” said operations chief Anar Zamanov.

Health officials noted that while both mother and child are in stable condition, the newborn will remain under observation in the coming days due to his premature arrival.
