“If GPT-3 was like a high schooler and GPT-4 a college student, GPT-5 is like a PhD expert.”

During a livestreamed announcement on the company’s website, OpenAI described GPT-5 as a major leap in intelligence and utility. The model delivers better performance across complex domains like mathematics, science, finance, and law. It is designed to provide more accurate and nuanced answers while admitting uncertainty when appropriate.

Free and Paid Access

GPT-5 will be available to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free plan. However, free-tier users will face a daily query limit, after which the system will revert to a simpler model. Paid users — including ChatGPT Plus subscribers — will have unrestricted access.

Developers accessing the OpenAI API can now choose between GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano, depending on their performance needs and budget.

New Personalization Features

In addition to technical upgrades, GPT-5 introduces new personalization tools:

  • Chat style options: Users can choose how the AI responds, selecting from Cynic, Robot, Listener, or Nerd personas.

  • Custom chat themes: Aesthetic customization is now built into the ChatGPT interface.

Safety and Testing

OpenAI says the release followed an extensive safety review, including over 5,000 hours of testing to reduce risks and ensure reliable performance. The company emphasized that GPT-5 is more transparent about its limitations and less likely to generate hallucinated facts.

Anticipated Impact

GPT-5’s release was delayed multiple times — originally expected in mid-2024, then pushed to mid-2025, and finally launched in August. Despite the wait, ChatGPT’s user base continued to surge. OpenAI now reports over 500 million weekly active users, with projections of hitting 700 million in the near future.

Founded in 2015 by Elon Musk and others, OpenAI has become a global leader in AI development. Since the debut of ChatGPT in November 2022, the company has released a series of increasingly powerful models, including GPT-4 in March 2023, GPT-4 Turbo in November 2023, and GPT-4o in May 2024.

With GPT-5, OpenAI signals its boldest move yet in the race toward artificial general intelligence.
