Azerbaijan’s U-17 wrestling team concluded its campaign at the World Championship in Athens with an impressive haul of four medals — one gold and three bronze.
According to the Wrestling Federation’s press service, Azerbaijani wrestlers competed for medals on the final day of the tournament in four different weight categories.
In the 60 kg category, Hasan Hasanov delivered a strong performance, defeating Greece’s Pavlos Dintiadis and Kyrgyzstan’s Ulukman Dzhekshenkulov in the repechage rounds. He went on to win the bronze medal match against Canada’s Nathan Nash with a close 5–4 score.
Ramal Mirguseynov (51 kg) was eliminated in the repechage after losing to India’s Danraj Jamnik, 4–7.
In the 71 kg class, Rashad Veyselov edged out Georgia’s Koba Goguadze (12–10) in his first repechage bout but was later defeated by Uzbekistan’s Farrukhbek Jumanazarov.
Said Pashayev (92 kg) claimed a bronze medal after beating Ukraine’s Samir Ibishov (2–0) and then overcoming Kazakhstan’s Beybaris Yergaliyev in a tight match (5–3). Pashayev is also the reigning European champion.
Earlier in the competition, Huseyn Ismailov (65 kg) was crowned world champion, while Hakim Taghiyev (110 kg) earned a bronze.
Overall, Azerbaijan finished fourth in the team standings with 90 points, just one point behind Kazakhstan, who secured third place. The United States topped the table with 154 points, followed by Iran with 150.
