The Zangezur Corridor: A Cause of Concern for Iran and Russia as It Shifts Regional Balance

Must read

The rhetoric surrounding the Zangezur Corridor has escalated in recent days. Following Ali Akbar Velayati’s statement, the senior advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, who framed the Zangezur Corridor as a blockade against Russia and Iran, Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov also issued a strong statement opposing the project, suggesting that its realization should be prevented.

The recent intensification of rhetoric from both Iran and Russia against Azerbaijan, especially around the Zangezur Corridor, raises significant questions about the strategic goals behind these positions and what this might mean for the region’s future.

Elchin Mirzebeyli, a member of the Azerbaijani Parliament, noted Oxu.Az, that discussions and initiatives regarding the Zangezur Corridor are not only about Azerbaijan-Armenia relations but also about the collision of interests among regional powers. The recent rhetoric from Russia and Iran is a continuation of their traditional stance against Azerbaijan’s independent and balanced policies.

Strategic Importance of the Zangezur Corridor

The Zangezur Corridor is not just a logistics project; it is strategically significant for Azerbaijan as it restores direct access to Nakhchivan, integrates Eastern-Western and North-South logistics systems, and strengthens Turkey and Central Asia’s connection with Europe. This is why Russia and Iran have intensified their rhetorical pressure on Azerbaijan in recent weeks. Iran has been conducting joint military drills with Russia in the border regions and the Caspian Sea while both countries continue to conduct biased campaigns against Azerbaijan in the information space.

President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks at the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum on July 19, 2025, once again highlighted Azerbaijan’s clear and pragmatic policy on this matter. As he noted, the Zangezur Corridor is a symbol, and the key issue is the opening of communications in the region, a reality that is already taking shape.

Azerbaijan’s Path Forward

Mirzebeyli emphasized that the Zangezur Corridor issue is not just about a logistical route but a strategic battle over how the South Caucasus will develop. Azerbaijan, he argued, stands as a constructive, unifying, and peace-oriented power. Despite pressures, Azerbaijan continues with determination along its chosen path. In the face of geopolitical threats, those who wish to see an independent and resilient state model should look to Azerbaijan’s real example.
