Major Upgrades for Baku Metro: New Stations, Parking Facilities, and Transfer Tunnels

Baku’s metro system is set for a significant transformation over the coming years, with major infrastructure developments aimed at improving accessibility, convenience, and passenger flow. A special focus is being placed on the busy and tourist-heavy Icherisheher station.

According to Khazar TV, a train turnaround facility will be constructed beyond Icherisheher station to enable trains to reverse direction efficiently. This will enhance the line’s flexibility and allow quick rerouting in emergency situations.

Above the turnaround zone, an underground parking facility is planned. This is expected to ease the chronic parking congestion in Baku’s historic city center, especially during the tourist season.

A major change is also planned for 28 May station. The current transfer system requires passengers to walk a considerable distance between lines. A new direct tunnel will be constructed to enable quicker and more seamless transfers, transforming 28 May into a central hub.

Additionally, 10 new stations are planned, with a focus on extending the Green and Purple lines. This expansion aims to improve metro coverage and better distribute commuter traffic across the network.
