Brussels Urges Swift Peace Deal Between Azerbaijan and Armenia

BRUSSELS, July 25, 2025 — The Belgian government has called for the prompt signing of the peace agreement draft reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia in March 2025, emphasizing its support for lasting peace and regional development in the South Caucasus.

In a statement to Report, the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Brussels’ backing for “a sustainable peace and regional development based on the UN principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and respect for human rights.”

“As an active member of the European Union, Belgium consistently advocates for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the observance of international law in the South Caucasus region,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Responding to criticism from Azerbaijan over a recent resolution passed by the Belgian Parliament — described by Baku as an unfriendly move harmful to the peace process — the ministry emphasized the separation of powers.

“In line with the principle of separation of powers, the Belgian Parliament holds independent and autonomous authority to adopt resolutions,” the statement read.

The controversial document was initially introduced by the far-right Vlaams Belang faction in December 2024 and later amended to include references to peace. However, most of the text remained unchanged despite significant progress in negotiations between Baku and Yerevan in the intervening months.

The resolution has been widely criticized in Azerbaijan for containing anti-Azerbaijani language and calls seen as undermining the ongoing normalization process.

The European Union has repeatedly reiterated its support for a comprehensive peace agreement and normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Both sides have made progress in direct negotiations this year, including recent technical meetings facilitated by Brussels.
