Azerbaijani Village Struggles Amid Severe Water Shortage

Dashly Chalgam, Siyazan District – July 23, 2025 — Residents of Dashly Chalgam, a remote mountain village in Azerbaijan’s Siyazan District, are facing a critical water shortage, with around 30 households relying on a single natural spring as their only source of water. The spring, locals say, provides only a weak trickle, forcing people to carry water daily in plastic containers — often under scorching summer temperatures nearing 50°C (122°F).

“I have a car, so I can haul water home every day. But what about those who don’t?” one resident told local media. “Most people here have health problems from carrying heavy loads. The youth have all left. We’re the ones left behind, hauling water in this heat just to survive.”

The situation underscores a long-standing infrastructure gap between rural and urban areas in Azerbaijan, Baku.TV informs.

The Regional Irrigation and Water Management Service, operating under the country’s Water Resources Agency, confirmed that Dashly Chalgam lacks a centralized water supply system. Officials cite the village’s mountainous terrain as a key obstacle to installing pipeline infrastructure. However, they added that project documentation for developing water access in such remote areas has already been prepared and that implementation will proceed in stages, depending on technical and geographic conditions.

Despite these assurances, frustration among residents continues to mount. Experts warn that without urgent intervention, the health and well-being of those living in Dashly Chalgam may further deteriorate.

“This isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a humanitarian issue,” said one regional development specialist. “Access to clean water is a fundamental right, and no village should be left behind.”

For now, however, the residents of Dashly Chalgam continue to wait — and walk — for water.
