Meta Shuts Down Two Facebook Pages Targeting Azerbaijan with Disinformation

Baku, July 22, 2025

Meta has taken down two Facebook pages—“Echo of Baku” and “Azeri Horizon”—following a formal request from Azerbaijan’s Electronic Security Service (ESS), citing repeated violations of community standards and coordinated disinformation campaigns.

In a statement to Oxu.Az, the ESS said the pages were deliberately created by certain groups to spread manipulative, provocative content intended to mislead the public and disrupt social order in Azerbaijan.

Meta’s internal review confirmed the allegations, and the company proceeded to deactivate the accounts. The decision was based on violations of its community guidelines, particularly regarding hate speech, misinformation, and privacy breaches, according to Meta’s response.

“This action aligns with Meta’s internal protocols and its commitment to enforcing community standards against harmful content,” the statement read.

The incident highlights the ongoing struggle between governments and digital platforms to combat information warfare and foreign-influenced online propaganda. Azerbaijani authorities continue to monitor similar activities and maintain dialogue with tech firms to ensure prompt intervention in cases of digital threats.
