ANKARA — July 22, 2025 — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reiterated Turkey’s unwavering commitment to full European Union membership and called for the immediate removal of political obstacles impeding the accession process.
Speaking to reporters aboard his return flight from Northern Cyprus, Erdoğan emphasized that Ankara is ready to move forward without delay in its bid to join the EU.
“We cannot afford to wait even a single day to advance negotiations,” Erdoğan stated. “We once again declare to all our colleagues in the EU that Turkey remains firmly committed to full membership. The political barriers imposed on our path must be lifted without further delay. We expect the European Union to pursue its relations with Turkey on the basis of fairness.”
The Turkish leader argued that recent developments within and around Europe have highlighted the need for the EU to include a dynamic, solutions-oriented member like Turkey.
“Breaking free from outdated political mindsets could help the EU enter a new era and guide it into the future,” Erdoğan said. “Turkey is ready for full membership.”
Turkey’s EU accession process has been stalled for years amid political tensions, disputes over Cyprus, and concerns over democratic backsliding. However, Erdoğan’s latest comments signal Ankara’s continued interest in revitalizing the long-frozen talks and positioning itself as a strategic partner in shaping the future of the European bloc.
