Foreign Intelligence Agent “Abu Malik” Captured in Azerbaijan Counterterrorism Operation

BAKU, July 22 — Azerbaijani security services have arrested a man identified as a foreign intelligence agent operating under the alias “Abu Malik,” who was reportedly involved in recruiting Azerbaijani citizens abroad and organizing the arrests of those who refused to cooperate.

The State Security Service (SSS) disclosed key details of the case during a court hearing held on July 18.

According to the SSS, the agent was identified as Azerbaijani citizen Muhammad Shirin oglu Aliyev, who had been operating under the pseudonym Abu Malik since September 2022. Aliyev is accused of conducting subversive activities on foreign soil, including the recruitment of individuals with radical religious ideologies for a planned terrorist-diversionary group.

Authorities say Aliyev was detained during a carefully coordinated intelligence and counterterrorism operation and was subsequently transferred to Azerbaijan.

The ongoing criminal investigation alleges that Aliyev’s actions posed a serious threat to national security. He has been officially charged with high treason under Article 274 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, APA informs.

The Sabail District Court has ordered that Aliyev be held in pretrial detention for four months pending further investigation.

This arrest underscores Azerbaijan’s broader efforts to clamp down on foreign-led radicalization efforts and protect its citizens from external manipulation. While the SSS did not disclose which foreign intelligence agency Aliyev was allegedly working for, officials noted that the operation was part of a larger campaign targeting extremist networks operating beyond Azerbaijan’s borders.

The case has sparked renewed concern over foreign intelligence interference in the region and the vulnerabilities of diaspora communities to ideological recruitment campaigns. Security analysts suggest that more arrests could follow as Azerbaijani intelligence continues to track international networks with suspected links to hostile operations.
