Baku, July 14, 2025 — The administration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has denied any knowledge of reported U.S. intentions to take control of the Zangezur transport corridor.
A senior source within Erdoğan’s office told reporters:
“We are not aware of this and therefore cannot comment.”
The statement comes in response to claims that U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, recently told journalists in New York that Washington is ready to manage the 32-kilometer Zangezur Corridor under a 100-year lease agreement.
No formal proposal or confirmation has been issued by U.S. or regional officials, and the comments have sparked confusion and speculation among observers in Ankara and Baku.
The Zangezur Corridor is a strategically sensitive project meant to link mainland Azerbaijan with its exclave of Nakhchivan through Armenian territory, and has been a focal point in regional infrastructure talks involving Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
