Armenian Authorities Detain Seven More in 2020 Post-War Riots Investigation

Must read

The Investigative Committee of Armenia has announced the detention of seven more individuals accused of participating in the mass unrest that erupted on the night of the Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire agreement in November 2020.

According to a statement released to Armenian media, authorities have submitted requests to the court to impose administrative supervision as a preventive measure against the detainees.

This follows a wave of arrests in late May, when nine others were detained under the same investigation. The total number of suspects now stands in the dozens, with the identification process ongoing, the committee noted.

The unrest unfolded in the early hours of November 10, 2020, after the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia signed a trilateral declaration to end hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. Protesters stormed government buildings in Yerevan, breaking through police lines, smashing windows, and forcing open the doors of the Government House.

One of the most violent incidents that night involved an attack on then-Speaker of Parliament Ararat Mirzoyan, who is currently serving as Foreign Minister.

The ongoing investigation underscores the deep societal rifts and unresolved anger that followed Armenia’s defeat in the 2020 war, and the government’s continuing effort to prosecute those involved in what it describes as violent insurrection and political destabilization.
