Batumi, Georgia — July 9 — The FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi continues with early knockout rounds, as two members of the Azerbaijan national chess team, Ulviyya Fataliyeva and Gulnar Mammadova, competed today in the Round of 64 (1/32 finals).
Grandmaster Ulviyya Fataliyeva faced Georgian player Lela Javakhishvili, while Gulnar Mammadova took on Polina Shuvalova, who is competing under the FIDE flag. Both Azerbaijani players lost their opening games.
The second legs of their matchups — crucial for determining who advances — will be played tomorrow.
Earlier in the tournament, Govhar Beydullayeva and Khanim Balajayeva, also representing Azerbaijan, were eliminated in the preliminary stages.
The Women’s World Cup is one of the most prestigious events on the international chess calendar and serves as part of the qualification cycle for the Women’s Candidates Tournament.
