At a recent press briefing, U.S. State Department spokesperson Temmi Bruce commented on Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s statement expressing hope that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan could be signed in the near future.

According to the Department’s Press Office, Bruce emphasized that Rubio’s remarks reflect Washington’s growing optimism over recent diplomatic developments in the South Caucasus.

“It was important for the Secretary to make that statement,” Bruce said. “We are encouraged by the progress made with U.S. involvement — from ceasefires to negotiations to tangible breakthroughs. Secretary Rubio had every reason to say what he did. As new details emerge, we’ll be sure to share them.”

Sustained U.S. Engagement in Peace Process

Secretary Rubio had earlier reaffirmed the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting efforts toward a lasting peace settlement between Yerevan and Baku, adding that Washington remains actively engaged in facilitating dialogue and supporting confidence-building measures between the two sides.

Rubio also noted that the U.S. hopes a final agreement could be reached soon, citing recent diplomatic momentum and encouraging signals from both governments.

What’s at Stake

The United States has played a quiet but consistent role in supporting talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, particularly as regional powers — including Russia, Turkey, and the European Union — pursue their own diplomatic tracks.

Analysts say a breakthrough peace deal would not only stabilize one of the world’s most enduring flashpoints but also reshape trade, security, and geopolitical dynamics across the South Caucasus — a region of strategic significance that links Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

As high-level meetings between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev continue — most recently confirmed for Abu Dhabi — international observers are watching closely for signs of a breakthrough.

“We’re encouraged,” Bruce added. “And we remain committed to helping the parties achieve a durable and just peace.”
