Statement by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Azerbaijan

In response to numerous media inquiries regarding recent events in Baku, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Azerbaijan issues the following statement:

Over the past 24 hours, the Embassy has received a large number of appeals from Russian citizens currently in the Republic of Azerbaijan, including tourists. They reported that individuals in civilian clothing—some identifying themselves as police officers—arrived at their residences to inquire about the purpose of their stay and conducted document checks. Some citizens claimed that they and their family members were subjected to physical force.

We urge Russian citizens in Azerbaijan to report any such incidents via the Embassy’s emergency hotline: +994 50 270 26 59.

We can confirm the detention of a group of Russian citizens, including journalists.

The Embassy has sent official diplomatic notes to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, demanding consular access to the detained Russian nationals. As of now, no response has been received from the Azerbaijani side. The Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely and is taking all necessary measures.

In light of the current situation, Russian citizens are strongly advised to carefully assess the conditions in Azerbaijan before making any travel decisions.

We also urge all Russian nationals currently in the country to exercise increased caution and vigilance.
