A peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan could be signed before Armenia’s upcoming elections in June, according to a statement made in Azerbaijan’s parliament.

Speaking at a recent session of the Milli Majlis, MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev said that Azerbaijan is prepared to move toward a peace deal if Armenia commits, in its new Constitution, to renouncing any territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

Under Azerbaijan’s legislation, the 44-day war is officially recognized as the Patriotic War, meaning that any peace agreement with Armenia must be reviewed and approved by parliament. Hasanguliyev noted that the draft peace document was paraphed in August last year, making parliamentary consideration both timely and necessary.

He proposed placing the issue on the parliamentary agenda and emphasized that practical elements of cooperation already exist between the two countries. According to the MP, cargo shipments to Armenia currently pass through Azerbaijani territory, and Baku supplies fuel to its neighbor.

Given this reality, Hasanguliyev argued that reciprocal logistics are also feasible, including the transit of Azerbaijani goods through Armenia, if the political framework allows it.

He also pointed out that discussions on opening transport routes between Turkey and Armenia are expected to continue until March, a development that could further influence regional dynamics and support broader normalization efforts in the South Caucasus.

The statement signals that, from Baku’s perspective, the coming months-leading up to Armenia’s elections-could be decisive for advancing a formal peace agreement, provided key constitutional and political conditions are met.
