Georgia has introduced a new entry requirement for foreign travelers, making medical insurance mandatory for all tourists entering the country from 2026.

Under the new rules, visitors who fail to present valid medical insurance at the border may face fines or be denied entry altogether. The requirement also applies to travelers from neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan.

According to Georgian tourism authorities, the insurance policy must provide minimum medical coverage equivalent to around $12 and must be issued in English or Georgian. Border officials are authorized to verify insurance documents upon arrival.

Insurance experts say that short-term travel insurance is inexpensive and widely available. A standard policy for a one-week trip to Georgia typically costs the equivalent of about 12 manats and covers emergency medical treatment, accidents, and, if necessary, surgical procedures.

If a traveler extends their stay and the insurance expires, the policy must be renewed. This can usually be done online through insurance providers, even while abroad.

Tourism specialists note that while medical insurance has long been mandatory for visa-required destinations, Georgia’s decision marks a shift for a traditionally visa-free country. Travelers are advised to arrange insurance in advance to avoid complications at the border.

The new rule also applies to students and long-term residents returning to Georgia after leaving the country, who must obtain valid insurance again before re-entry.
