Prices of seasonal citrus fruits in Azerbaijan have nearly doubled, according to observations from markets and supermarket chains across the country.

Apples and mandarins that sold for 1-2 manats per kilogram last year are now priced significantly higher. Oranges currently cost between 3 and 4.5 manats per kilogram, while mandarins are selling for 2-2.5 manats. In some cases, this represents a price increase of up to 100 percent.

The sharp rise has raised concerns among consumers, especially as citrus fruits are considered staple winter produce.

Commenting on the situation, economist Akif Nasirli said the surge is primarily driven by a combination of reduced supply and increased demand.

According to Nasirli, unfavorable weather conditions affected crop yields in several regions, resulting in lower-than-expected harvests. At the same time, rising fuel and transportation costs have pushed prices higher. Logistics expenses for imported fruits have also increased, adding further pressure on retail prices.

Nasirli noted that a slight price correction may be possible in the coming months as new harvests reach the market and supply improves. However, he cautioned that a return to last year’s price levels is unlikely.

“High demand, global market conditions, and ongoing inflationary pressures continue to keep prices elevated,” the economist said. “In an environment where most goods are becoming more expensive, citrus fruits cannot remain an exception.”

Experts say future price trends will largely depend on climate conditions, import dynamics, and broader inflation trends in the domestic market.
