Historical Background

The origins of the Day of Solidarity date back to 1989, marked by two symbolic events.

On December 31, 1989, border engineering barriers along the Soviet–Iranian frontier in Nakhchivan were dismantled, allowing Azerbaijanis separated for decades to reconnect with compatriots living in Southern Azerbaijan for the first time in many years. On the same day, the Conference of Turkic-Speaking Peoples opened in Istanbul, further underscoring the broader regional context of cultural and ethnic unity.

Official Recognition

The observance was formally established on December 16, 1991, during a session of the Supreme Mejlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, chaired by Heydar Aliyev. The Mejlis adopted a resolution proposing the official designation of December 31 as the Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis Worldwide.

Following an appeal from the Nakhchivan parliament, the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan adopted the corresponding law on December 25, 1991, officially declaring December 31 a national day of observance.

Global Observance

Today, the Day of Solidarity is marked by Azerbaijani communities in countries around the world through cultural events, gatherings, and public initiatives aimed at preserving national identity and strengthening diaspora ties.

The day serves as both a reminder of historical unity and a symbol of continued connection among Azerbaijanis worldwide.
