Ruben Vardanyan May Get a Life Sentence

Proceedings continued at the Baku Military Court in the criminal case against Ruben Vardanyan, an Armenian citizen charged under multiple articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, including crimes against peace and humanity, war crimes, terrorism, and the financing of terrorism.

According to Vesti Baku, the prosecutor representing the state delivered remarks during the court hearing and formally requested a sentence of life imprisonment for Vardanyan.

Vardanyan is charged under a wide range of Criminal Code provisions, including articles related to the planning and waging of an aggressive war; deportation and forced displacement of civilians; persecution; enforced disappearances; unlawful deprivation of liberty under international law; torture; mercenarism; violations of the laws and customs of war; breaches of international humanitarian law during armed conflicts; intentional murder and attempted murder; illegal entrepreneurship; terrorism and terrorism financing; organization of a criminal group; illegal trafficking and possession of weapons, ammunition, and explosives; acts endangering aviation security; violent seizure or retention of power and attempts to alter the constitutional order by force; creation of illegal armed formations; and illegal crossing of the state border of Azerbaijan.

The preliminary investigation into the case was conducted by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan.
