Many defaulters view alimony as a punishment or a payment to a former spouse, rather than a responsibility toward their own child. Experts warn that non-payment directly harms children, often leaving them feeling neglected and causing long-term psychological damage.

Lawyers note that avoiding alimony carries serious consequences. Prolonged non-payment can result in fines and administrative detention, while repeat cases may lead to criminal charges and up to one year in prison.

From January 1, 2026, Azerbaijan’s minimum alimony payment will increase from 246 to 260 manats.
