Turkey Orders Deportation of Former Azerbaijani MP Gultekin Hajibeyli

Turkish authorities have ordered the deportation of Gultekin Hajibeyli, a former member of parliament and current member of the National Council, imposing a five-year entry ban, she said on social media.

According to Hajibeyli, the official deportation decision was formally delivered to her on Monday. She noted that at the time of the ruling she held a valid two-year residence permit in Turkey and had committed no legal or administrative violations.

Hajibeyli said the grounds for the decision were not explained to her.

In a public statement, she reported that she has been held since November 29 at a deportation center under heightened supervision and has filed a legal appeal challenging her detention.

Despite the pending court review, Turkish authorities proceeded with a five-year deportation order, a move she described as politically motivated rather than legally justified.

The former MP also said she was recently transferred from the Arnavutköy Removal Center to the Çatalca Removal Center, where detainees are typically held for shorter periods.

She said this raised concerns that preparations may be underway for her forced return to Azerbaijan.

In her statement, Hajibeyli directly addressed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, expressing disbelief that Turkey – a country she described as her “second homeland” – would deport her without clear legal justification.

She urged Turkish authorities not to support what she characterized as political repression against opposition figures in Azerbaijan and called on Ankara to act in line with principles of law, justice, and human rights.

Earlier media reports had linked Hajibeyli and another the National Council, Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) chairman Ali Kerimli, to an alleged coup plan attributed to former Presidential Administration head Ramiz Mehdiyev.

Ramiz Mehdiyev has been charged under Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code with actions aimed at the violent seizure of state power, treason, and money laundering.
