Azerbaijan Sees Sharp Rise in Confectionery Prices

Confectionery products in Azerbaijan have become noticeably more expensive, outpacing the growth of prices for other flour-based goods.

Official figures confirm the trend. In 2020, one kilogram of pakhlava cost 8.11 manats; today the price has climbed to 12.84 manats. Earlier this year, Oreo announced a 20% increase in prices across its product line.

Other popular brands – Biscolota, Eti, and Ülker – have also raised prices, with a year-on-year increase ranging from 10 to 50 qəpik.

Why are confectionery items becoming more expensive faster than other baked goods?

According to economist Akif Nasirli, the key factor is the high price of raw materials used in confectionery production, combined with more complex technological processes.

“Ingredients such as sugar, butter, vegetable oils, cocoa, dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate significantly increase the final cost,” Nasirli told Bizim.media. “These components are expensive globally, and the sharp rise in world sugar prices directly affects production costs.”

Packaging and branding also add to the final price.

“As a result, costly raw materials, market-driven pricing strategies, and packaging expenses make confectionery items considerably more expensive than simpler flour products,” the expert noted.
