With just over a month left until New Year’s celebrations, markets across Baku are experiencing a sharp rise in demand for live poultry.
Chickens, ducks, geese and especially turkeys are in high seasonal demand – and the price tags are beginning to reflect it.
Vendors say the picture varies from stall to stall: while some insist prices have remained stable, many acknowledge that the pre-holiday rush has already pushed costs upward.
On Baku’s main markets, shoppers can find both live birds and fully cleaned poultry. “A live goose goes for 15 manats, a female turkey for 22, a male for 16. Roosters are 22 manats each,” one vendor told reporters.
Traders from Ujar and Sheki confirm that turkey demand spikes every year in late autumn – and 2025 is no exception. Compared with prices earlier in the season, the cost of turkeys has risen by an average of two manats per kilo.
“Roosters are 14–15 manats, chickens 8–9. Geese and ducks are around 20–25 manats,” another seller said.
A notable trend this year is the growing number of consumers choosing to buy live birds well ahead of the holidays. Many prefer to raise or fatten the poultry themselves, ensuring a fresh product for the New Year table and avoiding the inevitable price hikes of late December.
