Economist Natig Jafarli Sparks Comparison: “Two Nights in Shamakhi or Five Days in Doha?”

A Facebook post from economist Natig Jafarli ignited a public debate by comparing domestic hotel rates to New Year holiday packages abroad – most notably Doha, Qatar.

According to a local travel agency, a four-night, five-day New Year trip to Doha (December 28 – January 1) costs around $750 per person, roughly 1,275 AZN.

The package includes:

  • Round-trip airfare

  • Hotel accommodation

  • Breakfast

  • Insurance

  • Group transfers

Hotels listed in the Doha package are well-rated 5-star properties, including Cielo Hotel Lusail, Steigenberger Hotel & Residence Shaza Doha, City Centre Rotana Doha, and DoubleTree by Hilton Doha Old Town.

Jafarli noted the contrast plainly:
“Two nights in Shamakhi cost 950 AZN, while five days in Doha – airfare included – cost 1,275 AZN.”
He calculated the per-night cost:

  • Shamakhi: 475 AZN per night

  • Doha: 318 AZN per night

His conclusion stirred discussion across social media: Why is a luxury holiday in Qatar cheaper than a two-day celebration in Shamakhi?
