U.S. President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “surprised” by Washington’s success in mediating the long-standing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Trump made the remark at the U.S.–Saudi Arabia Investment Forum, highlighting what he described as an unprecedented diplomatic breakthrough.
“Putin called me and said he couldn’t believe I managed to settle it,” Trump told participants, referring to the peace framework reached earlier this year.
On August 8, 2025, following talks in Washington between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and President Trump, the three sides agreed on a joint declaration. The document confirmed that the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan had initialed a mutually agreed text of a peace treaty establishing peaceful and interstate relations between the two countries.
As part of the Washington outcome, Yerevan also agreed to cooperate with the United States and international partners on the development of the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP)”, a new corridor project linked to regional connectivity and post-conflict integration.
