Azerbaijan ended its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-3 home defeat to France at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium in Baku.
The hosts made a stunning start when Renat Dadashov put Azerbaijan ahead in the 4th minute with a well-timed finish from a flank delivery. But France responded quickly and decisively.
Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized in the 17th minute, before Maghnes Akliouche gave the visitors the lead at 30 minutes. France extended the advantage moments before halftime through Khéphren Thuram, who struck in added time (45+1).
Despite a more balanced second half, neither side added to the scoreline, and France secured a confident away victory.
France tops Group D with 13 points and had already qualified for the 2026 World Cup finals before the match. Ukraine and Iceland – both on seven points – continue their battle for second place. Azerbaijan finishes the group stage with one point, occupying fourth position.
The match was officiated by Latvian referee Andris Treimanis.
