Azerbaijani customs officers have intercepted a major drug-trafficking attempt involving more than 456 kilograms of heroin destined for Europe, the State Customs Committee said on Friday.
The shipment, declared as tile adhesive, was being transported by rail from Iran to Estonia and was stopped at the Astara Railway Customs Post on Azerbaijan’s southern border.
During inspection, officers discovered heroin hidden inside 44 of the 3,250 bags contained in the freight wagon. The total weight of the narcotics – including packaging – amounted to 456.8 kilograms.

According to customs officials, the estimated retail value of the seized heroin on the European black market exceeds $90 million.
