Pashinyan: Return of Armenians to Karabakh Could Threaten Peace with Azerbaijan

Potential plans for the return of Armenian refugees to Nagorno-Karabakh could endanger the fragile peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan warned during remarks in Yerevan.

“I consider the agenda of returning our displaced sisters and brothers from Nagorno-Karabakh a risk to peace,” Pashinyan said, according to TASS.

“This topic – the return of internally displaced persons – is dangerous in itself, because it means a return to the original parameters of the conflict.”

The Armenian leader compared the current peace process to a “newborn child” that must be nurtured carefully to survive.

“We must sign a peace treaty, carry out border delimitation, and then leave each other in peace,” he added.

Analysts note that Pashinyan’s statement signals a significant shift from earlier Armenian rhetoric, where the issue of “safe return” was often framed as a humanitarian priority.

The prime minister’s new tone reflects growing caution in Yerevan – and an apparent recognition that reviving the Karabakh question could destabilize the ongoing normalization process with Baku.
