Former chairman of the now-dissolved Yüksaliş Party, Anar Asadli, has been arrested in Azerbaijan, according to a decision by the Baku Grave Crimes Court, Qafqazinfo reported.
The information was confirmed by Asadli’s lawyer, Hikmet Aliyev. The Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office has reopened a major fraud case against Asadli that was first launched three years ago. The case has now been referred to court for trial.
Asadli faces charges under Article 178 of the Criminal Code (“Fraud”), which covers large-scale deception involving financial or property damage.
Before his arrest, Asadli had been summoned to the Main Department for Combating Organized Crime of the Interior Ministry following complaints from two acquaintances, Ogtay Gasimov and Ilham Huseynov, who accused him of failing to repay personal debts.
The Yüksaliş Party, which Asadli once led, was previously dissolved.
