Georgia Rejects EU Visa Pressure, Seeks Renewal of U.S. Partnership

Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili has said that recent discussions about the possible suspension of the EU’s visa-free regime for Georgia are baseless and not supported within the bloc.

According to Report’s local bureau, Bochorishvili emphasized that EU member states have no intention of turning visa policy into a political tool.

“It has become clear to everyone that the talk about suspending Georgia’s visa-free travel and using it as leverage is unfounded. The EU is not prepared to turn such a regime into a political instrument with a single stroke of the pen,” she said.

The minister added that there is not enough support within the EU to move forward with any formal steps toward suspension of the visa-free agreement.

In the same interview, Bochorishvili underlined that Georgia aims to deepen its strategic partnership with the United States, calling the relationship with Washington a cornerstone of her country’s foreign policy.

“We want the strategic partnership with the U.S. to have real substance. Tbilisi will do everything possible to strengthen Georgian-American relations,” she told Rustavi 2.

Acknowledging tensions during the Biden administration, she said Georgia is ready to reset ties in a constructive way:

“It’s unfortunate that our relations have not been at the same level as before. However, Georgia will make every effort to restore them in a positive context.”

Bochorishvili also stressed the need for clarity in U.S. policy objectives toward Georgia, saying that future cooperation should be based on mutual respect and tangible engagement.
