While global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise, Azerbaijan has seen a noticeable decline in consumer interest.
Cars once purchased enthusiastically are now sitting unsold, experts say.
According to transport specialist Eldaniz Jafarov, who spoke to Baku.TV, the downturn has several causes.
“First, there is a shortage of charging stations,” he explained. “Second, there are technical service difficulties – few qualified mechanics and limited availability of spare parts.”
Jafarov added that driving range is also a concern:
“Even models advertised as having a 500-kilometer range often cover only around 350 kilometers in winter,” he noted.
The expert pointed out that the market became oversaturated over the past two years as a large number of electric cars were imported but not yet sold. “Only after this inventory clears will new shipments arrive,” he said.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid cars – which switch to gasoline when the battery runs out – have begun to outpace fully electric models in sales, reflecting consumer preference for practicality over full electrification.
According to data from the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan imported 1,559 fully electric vehicles worth $48.2 million in the first nine months of 2025.
These figures represent a 30.6% decline in volume and a 45.6% drop in value compared to the same period of 2024.
