Baku Court Opens Trial of Four Accused of Espionage for Foreign Intelligence

The Baku Military Court has held a preliminary hearing in the case of Ilkin Ganbarov, Vusal Agayev, Tural Aliyev, and Mamed Sharifov, who are accused of high treason through espionage in favor of a foreign intelligence service.

The session, chaired by Judge Bilal Mammadov, confirmed the defendants’ personal details before deciding to transfer the case to trial. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 31.

According to Report, all four men were indicted under Article 274 (High Treason) of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code – an offense punishable by 12 to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment, depending on the gravity of the case.

The investigation was conducted by the State Security Service (SSS). Officials said Ganbarov and Agayev were detained earlier in Azerbaijan, while Aliyev was captured in Jordan and Sharifov in Turkey, before both were extradited to Baku.
