Hazelnut kernel prices in Azerbaijan have jumped sharply in recent weeks, rising from 18-22 manats per kilogram to 30–35 manats, according to local retailers.
Sellers say wholesale prices have increased at the source, slowing down sales.
“We buy hazelnut kernels for about 28 manats and sell them for 30,” one shopkeeper said, adding that profit margins have narrowed.

Export Pressure and Low Yield
Economist Akif Nasirli told Bizim.Media that the main driver of the price increase is growing export demand, particularly from Turkey and European markets.
“As more nuts are purchased for export, domestic supply falls, pushing prices up,” he explained.
Nasirli noted that weather conditions also played a role. “In the summer of 2025, droughts and hailstorms in Gabala, Zagatala, Balakan, and Gakh reduced both yield and quality,” he said.
He added that higher fuel, energy, and labor costs, along with a weaker manat against the dollar and euro, have also contributed to the rise.
“Export-oriented producers are earning more abroad, which makes local prices climb,” Nasirli said.
Prices Likely to Remain High
According to the economist, hazelnut prices are expected to remain stable or rise slightly until the end of the year due to seasonal demand and limited stock.
“Unless the government regulates exports or increases imports, stabilization will be difficult,” Nasirli said.
