BAKU, October 2, 2025
Stargazers will soon have a chance to witness one of autumn’s brightest celestial shows. According to the Department of Astrophysics at Baku State University, the Orionid meteor shower will be active from October 2 to 7, with its peak expected on the night of October 21–22.
At its height, up to 20 meteors per hour may be visible streaking across the sky. The best viewing time will be after midnight, once the constellation Orion rises above the horizon. If skies are clear, the phenomenon will be easy to observe across Azerbaijan.
The Orionids are known for their exceptional speed, traveling at roughly 66 kilometers per second. Their trails appear short but strikingly bright.
This annual shower originates from Halley’s Comet, which leaves behind a trail of dust and rock particles. As Earth passes through this debris field, the fragments burn up in the atmosphere, producing dazzling flashes of light.
Astronomers describe the Orionids as one of the most impressive and reliable meteor showers of the season, offering a dramatic spectacle for both amateur observers and seasoned skywatchers.
