Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has set its sights on becoming a producer of “clean energy,” Vice President Afgan Isaev said Tuesday during the second day of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025).

Isaev outlined the company’s decarbonization program, stressing that SOCAR has already begun work toward its transition.

“We have targets for 2030, 2035, and 2050. By 2035, we aim to become a national oil-and-energy company with a balanced hydrocarbon portfolio. And by 2050, as we’ve stated before, we plan to transform into a national oil company with a ‘net-zero balance,’ providing affordable, sustainable, and reliable energy worldwide,” he said.

He added that shifting the workforce toward low-carbon industries is achievable given SOCAR’s broad professional base.

“The oil and gas sector covers a wide range of specializations-civil, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineers, as well as skilled workers, lawyers, financiers, and accountants. Redirecting them to sustainable and low-carbon business is not that difficult. SOCAR has already completed 300,000 hours of preparatory training,” Isaev noted.
