NEW YORK, Sept. 24
U.S. President Donald Trump and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev exchanged brief greetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s high-level week, a short on-camera moment that circulated on social media Tuesday.
The clip shows the leaders meeting in New York and exchanging pleasantries before moving on to separate engagements. No official readouts were released, and neither side disclosed details of any substantive discussion.
Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva are in New York for the UNGA’s 80th session, where the Azerbaijani leader also held meetings with several counterparts, including the presidents of Iraq, Kenya and Finland, the Greek prime minister, and the Council of Europe’s secretary-general.
The brief Trump–Aliyev encounter comes as Baku steps up its diplomatic profile at the UN and deepens energy links with Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor, while Washington remains engaged on South Caucasus stability and broader global security issues.
