NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2025
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva took part Tuesday in the high-level debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly at UN headquarters in New York.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation upon arrival, greeting President Aliyev and the First Lady ahead of the plenary discussions. More than 150 heads of state and government are attending this year’s session, held under the theme “Together for Better: 80 and More Years for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
The agenda of the debate includes global security challenges, the climate crisis, progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, and responses to ongoing conflicts.
While in New York, President Aliyev held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the session. He conferred with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Council of Europe Secretary-General Alain Berset, Kenyan President William Ruto, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
Azerbaijan’s participation in the 80th UN General Assembly underscores Baku’s commitment to multilateral dialogue and engagement with international partners at a time of heightened global uncertainty.
