TEHRAN, Sept. 20, 2025

Iran will host the next meeting of the Iran–Azerbaijan Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in Tehran next week, with large-scale cross-border projects set to headline the talks, Iranian business officials said.

Hossein Pirmoazzen, deputy chair of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, said after meeting Iran’s ambassador to Baku, Mojtaba Demirchilu, that Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev is expected to attend.

According to Pirmoazzen, the sides will review plans to establish a logistics port and a joint industrial township in the Bilasuvar Free Trade and Industrial Zone.

He noted the projects have the consent of the presidents of both countries and will move forward upon approval by the Joint Economic Commission, with technical work already under way.

Pirmoazzen also highlighted transport priorities, saying the launch of the Ardabil–Baku railway would open new channels for agricultural exports, improve access to Russia, and cut logistics costs. He added that border wait times for freight trucks have fallen from about one week to 48 hours, and said shifting customs operations to a 24/7 schedule would further raise throughput.
