ARDABIL/BAKU, Sept. 18
Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchiloo, said negotiations are in progress to reopen border checkpoints and broaden cooperation between the two countries.
During a visit to Iran’s Ardabil province, Demirchiloo said meetings with regional officials focused on expanding economic ties, including a potential railway link, creation of cross-border markets and joint economic zones, as well as the export, transit and transport of agricultural products.
“We hope the cooperation agreed at the presidential level will continue, and that Ardabil will play a more active role in advancing friendship between the two countries,” he said.
“Favorable conditions for border transport and crossings are vital for the welfare of both nations. Opening the borders and simplifying movement will help normalize and further strengthen Iran-Azerbaijan relations.”
No timeline or specific reopening date was disclosed.
