Georgia, Azerbaijan Projects Boost Competitiveness of Middle Corridor

BAKU, September 9

Transit time from the Azerbaijani border to Georgian checkpoints is set to shrink from five hours to just three thanks to new highways under construction, according to Rostomi Lezhava, executive director of Georgia’s Metro Logistics.

Speaking at the Black Sea–Caspian Logistics Forum 2025 in Baku, Lezhava highlighted several strategic projects underway in Georgia to strengthen the Middle Corridor.

“One of them is the construction of the deep-water port of Anaklia, scheduled for completion by 2029. Once operational, it will be able to receive mother vessels and handle up to 18,000 containers. This will be a turning point not only for Georgia but also for Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and China,” Lezhava said.

Alongside the Anaklia port, new highways are being built to directly link Georgia with Azerbaijan. These routes are expected to slash road transit times, boosting competitiveness for freight moving along the Middle Corridor between East and West.

Analysts note that both the Anaklia port and the upgraded road network are critical to positioning Georgia and Azerbaijan as central nodes in Eurasian logistics, offering alternatives to northern trade routes.
