Middle Corridor Expands: BTK Railway to Triple Cargo Capacity by 2034

BAKU, September 9

The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars (BTK) railway is set for a major upgrade, with freight capacity expected to more than triple over the next decade. By 2034, throughput is projected to reach 17 million tons per year, up from the current 5 million tons, according to Report.az.

Turhan Dilmaç, head of department at the Center for Strategic Studies of Turkey’s Foreign Ministry, announced the figures during the 13th session of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) Think Tank Forum in Baku.

He said Turkey will continue to strengthen cooperation with Azerbaijan and Central Asian states to expand the opportunities of the Middle Corridor, a strategic transit route connecting Europe and Asia.

Dilmaç also noted that the Middle Corridor aligns naturally with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, adding that Ankara has attached special importance to the project since its inception.
