The number of marriages between Azerbaijani citizens and foreigners continues to grow. According to official statistics, 1,870 such unions were registered in 2025, marking a notable increase compared to previous years.
Why are more Azerbaijanis choosing to marry foreign nationals?
Sociologist Elchin Bayramli, speaking to Patrulaz.az, said that globalization plays a major role – but not all unions are based on genuine relationships.
“Yes, in recent years, the number of marriages with foreigners has grown significantly. Compared to 40 years ago, such cases have multiplied. This is linked to globalization – the world is more open, people travel, study, and work abroad. There’s nothing wrong with that if the goal is a real family. But unfortunately, part of these marriages is driven by self-interest,” Bayramli noted.
Fake Marriages and Hidden Motives
According to the sociologist, around 30% of these marriages are fictitious or driven by material and legal motives.
“We see cases of marriages arranged for residence permits, jobs, inheritance, or property. Sometimes people marry elderly or lonely foreigners for financial gain. It happens here, too. About 70% of such unions are real families, while 30% are temporary or fraudulent, based on interests rather than feelings,” he said.
Bayramli warned that these situations often have serious social and moral consequences.
“There are cases where foreign men marry Azerbaijani women for temporary residence, only to divorce a year later. Many women are left alone with children, facing psychological and financial hardship. In some cases, young women are taken abroad under the pretext of marriage and become victims of exploitation. This is already a human rights issue linked to human trafficking,” he emphasized.
Need for Education and Legal Oversight
The sociologist called for stronger legal measures and awareness campaigns to prevent exploitative or fictitious marriages.
“We need preventive action, more oversight, and public education. Young people must understand that a real family is built on values, not on money or convenience. Otherwise, such false marriages undermine the social and moral fabric of society,” Bayramli concluded.
