A rare and emotionally sensitive case has drawn significant public attention in Azerbaijan, as a child who had been raised as a girl for 13 years underwent gender-affirming surgery after discovering and embracing his true identity.
According to Milli.Az, the teenager had struggled for years with deep psychological distress. After consultations with several professional psychologists, it became clear that the child identified as male and had been living in a gender role that did not align with his true self.
Following thorough medical and psychological assessments — and with the support of both his family and doctors — the child received medical assistance and underwent gender confirmation surgery. He has now been officially recognized as male.
The youth is reportedly in stable condition and continues to receive ongoing psychological support.
The incident has reignited national debate around gender identity, mental health, and the importance of allowing children the space and support to understand themselves. Mental health professionals emphasize that understanding and acceptance from families is crucial for the well-being and development of children experiencing gender dysphoria.
